Health and safety

In the EPS Group we fully recognise our health and safety responsibilities to all our staff, customers, contractors and the general public, and to this end we are committed to the continual improvement of the operating environment of our facilities.

We seek to maximise the safety of our staff and minimise the risk of injury and ill-health. We aim to achieve this by providing and maintaining a safe working environment at all times. EPS recognises that the responsibility for employee health and safety requires constant and continuing efforts through a partnership involving company management, our employees, sub-contractors and their employees, the client/owner and their employees.

By ensuring the safety of all involved, we can ensure the safe delivery of all of our projects and activities.

Management system

We maintain a documented management system which conforms to OHSAS 18001:2007,
UVDB Achilles Verify and CIF Safe-T-Cert and takes into account all regulatory and legislative requirements pertinent to our sector.

Our objectives include:

  • Continuous improvement at all levels of the organisation
  • Minimisation and elimination of injury or ill health to employees, contractors, subcontractors and all doing work on our behalf
  • Provision of all reasonable and adequate resources as required
  • Maintenance of a detailed company safety statement including applicable risk assessments
  • Communicating our policies both internally and externally
  • Ensuring that all employees are aware of their obligations
  • Creating a better environment for all, through the reduction, recycling and reuse of waste, the optimum usage of resources and the elimination of polluting releases to the environment
  • Compliance with all pertinent applicable regulations and legislation
  • Prevention of pollution
  • Manufacture and supply of products and services in a safe environment to customer specifications and requirements

EPS is certified in operating a health and safety management system in accordance with the requirements of the Safe-T-Cert system for the design, build and operation of water and wastewater treatment systems. EPS was awarded the Safe-T-Cert from the Construction Industry Federation.

Safety achievements

Among our recent safety highlights, 2010 saw the EPS Health and Safety Department work even more closely with staff in continuing to improve our safety management system and our safety culture. This was done largely through the internal safety committees which are now functioning in both the Mallow and Ballyhaunis branches on behalf of all EPS Regional Offices.

Continuing effort has been made through communication via:

  • Our monthly EPS Health and Safety and Environmental newsletter
  • The Health and Safety resources on the company intranet
  • The introduction of a text messaging service to ensure we are reaching all who are remotely based

In January 2010 the EPS Group set challenging targets for accident reduction, resulting in:

  • A 75% decrease in lost time accidents

  • A 27% decrease in first-aid injuries or non-reportable accidents

Health and Safety training is continuous, with all staff receiving training relevant to their specific role on an ongoing basis. EPS aims to continually improve awareness and competence through training where required.

Formal site inspections were carried out on a weekly basis with over 200 inspections carried out both on construction and operational sites. The Health and Safety Authority visited over 13 of our sites during 2010, with no major issues found.

Safety Statement

Our Safety Statement of policies and procedures is available at all offices and sites of the company, and its contents are communicated to office staff, site staff, subcontractors, external consultants, visitors, operators, labs/technicians.

The Safety Statement is prepared in accordance with requirements under the Safety, Health and Welfare at Work Act 2005, and is based on risk assessment of hazards identified across the group.

The Safety Policy is central to setting up an effective Safety Management System within the company. The aim of this system is to satisfy all our legal responsibilities and exercise greater control of health and safety within our organisation, for the protection of everybody concerned.
